Regions, Rhythm & How It Works

Pick the Coast That Matches Your Vibe

Not all beaches behave the same: winds and tides shape your day. We’ll steer you right.

Regions at a Glance

North/Northwest (Nungwi, Kendwa): minimal tides, best for all-day swimming & sunsets.
East/Southeast (Paje, Jambiani): wide tidal flats, kitesurf hub, boho cafés.
Northeast (Matemwe): quieter feel; access to Mnemba snorkeling.
Stone Town: culture, food, history; great 1–2 night start/end.

Tides & Swimming

East coast sees dramatic low tides (amazing sandbanks, long walks; swim at mid/high tide or hotel pools). North/west coasts stay swimmable most of the day—great for kids and casual bobbing.

Transfers & Access

Fly into ZNZ (Abeid Amani Karume). Private transfers: ~1 hr to northeast/east; ~1.5 hrs to southeast. We align flight times with check-in and tide windows when possible.

Culture & Etiquette

Zanzibar is majority Muslim. Beachwear is fine on resorts; dress modestly in towns/villages. During Ramadan, some cafés adjust hours—sunsets are magical with iftar markets.

Seasonality & Conditions

When to Go (and Why)

Zanzibar is year-round. Your comfort depends on wind, rain and what you want to do.

Dec–Mar (Kaskazi winds)

Warm, calmer seas on north/west; clear snorkeling days; festive buzz. East coast can be breezier—good for light kites and long swim windows at mid/high tide.

Jun–Oct (Kusi winds)

Drier, cooler evenings; best kitesurfing on the east/southeast; crisp air for Stone Town walks. Book early (peak months).

Apr–May & Nov (Rains)

Showers possible; quieter beaches and softer pricing. Great for relaxed couples and value seekers. Some boats may reschedule in heavy weather.

Straight Talk: East coast = dramatic low tides & seaweed farms (dreamy sandbanks). For all-day swim without timing tides, aim for Nungwi/Kendwa on the north/west.

Zanzibar FAQ

Which beach is best for all-day swimming?

North & northwest (Nungwi/Kendwa). The east/southeast has dramatic low tides—great for walks and kites, but time your swims.

Is Zanzibar good for kids?

Yes—shallow lagoons, hotel pools and calm dhow cruises. We pick north/west beaches for easy splash days and time boat trips to calmer seas.

Do you arrange flights & transfers?

We can package regional flights and private transfers to fit your safari schedule and check-in times.

What about seaweed & jellyfish?

Seaweed farming is part of east-coast life (beautiful at low tide). Jellyfish appear seasonally in small numbers—lifeguards and boats monitor conditions.
