Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi — Afro-Views Uganda safaris
BwindiImpenetrable Forest
Uganda Overview

The Pearl of Africa — forest depth and savannah reach.

Uganda offers a richer and more layered safari experience than its reputation sometimes suggests. Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi, chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth and the dramatic Nile at Murchison Falls — these are not single-note experiences. They are a full wildlife country.

Afro-Views plans Uganda as a standalone journey or as a meaningful extension to a Tanzania or Kenya safari circuit. We handle gorilla permit procurement, lodge selection by sector, routing logic between parks, and all internal flights and transfers — so the planning side is already done when you arrive.

Uganda works year-round. The dry months offer better trail conditions, but the green season brings fewer crowds, lush landscapes and excellent value at lodges across the country.

Permits firstGorilla permits sell out early. We book these before confirming any accommodation or routing.
Sector mattersBwindi has four sectors. We choose based on your trekking comfort, camp preference and date availability.
Park sequencingThe order you visit Uganda's parks changes the experience significantly. We route for rhythm, not just distance.
Multi-country readyUganda integrates cleanly with Tanzania and Kenya — we plan the full circuit as one trip.

Permit Planning

Gorilla permits are the starting point — everything else is built around them.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) issues a limited number of gorilla trekking permits per day across Bwindi's four sectors and Mgahinga. Permits sell out months in advance for peak season. Afro-Views secures your permits as the first step in planning — before lodges, before routes, before flights.

National Parks

Four very different parks. One complete Uganda.

Uganda's parks span from dense equatorial forest to open savannah, Nile delta floodplain and remote semi-arid wilderness. Each rewards a different travel instinct.

Volcano country

Mgahinga Gorilla NP

Uganda's smallest national park sits in the Virunga Volcanoes on the border with Rwanda and DRC — home to the only habituated gorilla family in Uganda outside Bwindi, and one of the best golden monkey tracking experiences in East Africa. Works well combined with Rwanda's Volcanoes NP.

Mountain gorilla close encounter — Bwindi trekking Uganda

"One hour with the gorillas changes everything."

Gorilla Trekking Guide

How gorilla trekking in Uganda actually works.

Each permitted group of up to eight travellers spends exactly one hour in the presence of a habituated mountain gorilla family — after a trek that can range from 45 minutes to six hours depending on where the family has moved. The hour is unhurried. There are no barriers. The gorillas carry on their day while you observe at close distance. It is unlike any other wildlife experience in Africa.

  • 01
Permit procurementUWA limits permits to eight people per gorilla family per day. We secure these at the outset — months in advance for busy seasons. Without a confirmed permit there is no trek.
  • 02
Sector selectionBwindi has four sectors with different trail difficulty, camp options and family characteristics. We recommend the right sector for your fitness level and lodging preference.
  • 03
Briefing and guide assignmentTreks depart at 8am from the ranger station. UWA rangers and trackers lead every group — Afro-Views handles your pre-briefing logistics, porter arrangement and expectations.
  • 04
The one-hour encounterOnce the family is located you spend exactly sixty minutes at close range. Respectful distance of 7 metres is observed — though gorillas sometimes approach on their own terms.
  • 05
Return and afternoon activitiesMost treks finish by early afternoon. Afternoons can include village walks, bird walks, craft visits or simply rest — we programme the day around your energy level after the trek.

When to Visit Uganda

Uganda is a year-round destination — but season shapes the experience.

Gorilla trekking is possible every month of the year. Trail conditions, crowd levels and lodge pricing change significantly across seasons. We plan around your dates with honest advice on what to expect.

Dec – FebDry · Short rains over · Good trails
Mar – MayLong rains · Lush · Fewer crowds
Jun – SepMain dry season · Peak trekking
Oct – NovShort rains · Green season value
Discuss your dates
June–September: peak dry season

Best trail conditions, highest permit competition — book permits at least 6 months ahead for these months.

December–February: short dry season

Excellent conditions with slightly lower lodge rates than peak — a strong window for gorilla trekking and savannah parks.

March–May: green season

Wetter trails but dramatic forest atmosphere, fewer travellers and some of the best lodge rates of the year.

Year-round birding

Uganda's 1,065 bird species include many forest endemics — excellent birding is available regardless of the season or primary purpose of the trip.

Chimpanzee tracking Kibale Forest Uganda
Kibale Forest

The finest chimp tracking in East Africa.

Kibale Forest National Park holds the highest density of primates on the continent. Chimpanzee habituation here means you can follow the chimps through dense forest canopy as they feed, socialise and move — a different but equally profound experience to gorilla trekking.

  • Chimpanzee habituation experienceSpend a full day with a family in the process of habituation — a more intimate encounter than standard tracking.
  • 13 primate speciesRed colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, L'Hoest's monkey and olive baboon alongside chimps in the same forest system.
  • Bigodi Wetland SanctuaryA community-managed wetland bordering Kibale — superb birding and additional primate sightings within walking distance of most lodges.
  • 350+ bird speciesIncluding the African pitta, green-breasted pitta and many Albertine Rift endemics — one of Uganda's finest birding habitats.
  • Day or multi-night stayKibale works as a full two-night visit or as a transit between Queen Elizabeth and the gorilla sectors in the southwest.

Practical Information

What to know before you plan Uganda.

Key logistics, health, permit and travel facts — so your planning starts with the right foundation.

Visas

Most nationalities require a Uganda visa — available as an East Africa Tourist Visa covering Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda in one application. Afro-Views advises on the right visa route for your nationality and itinerary.

Health & Vaccinations

Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for entry. Malaria prophylaxis recommended. Some gorilla-sector lodges require a negative gorilla health declaration. Afro-Views provides a full pre-travel health checklist.

Getting There

Entebbe International Airport (EBB) receives direct flights from London, Dubai, Amsterdam, Nairobi, Addis Ababa and Kigali. Internal charter flights connect Entebbe to Kihihi (Bwindi south), Kasese (QENP) and Pakuba (Murchison).

Getting Around

Private 4WD vehicle travel between parks is standard for most circuits. Internal charter flights reduce transit days significantly for longer routes — especially for Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley.

Gorilla Permit Costs

USD $700 per person for a standard gorilla trek permit (UWA, 2024–2025 rate). The gorilla habituation experience (full day) costs USD $1,500 per person. Mgahinga permits are typically easier to secure on shorter notice.

What to Pack

Long-sleeve shirts and trousers for the forest (protection from insects and nettles). Waterproof hiking boots — mandatory. Garden gloves for Bwindi's stinging nettles. Neutral colours. A daypack and walking stick (provided at the park).

Photography

No flash photography inside the gorilla perimeter. Standard camera equipment is fine — a 70–200mm lens covers most situations from respectful distance. Video is permitted during the one-hour encounter.

Budget Range

Uganda is a mid-to-premium destination — largely driven by the gorilla permit cost and lodge quality in remote forest areas. A well-designed Uganda circuit typically starts from USD $4,000–$6,000 per person for 7–10 days, excluding international flights.

Uganda FAQ

Questions guests ask before planning Uganda.

How do I secure a gorilla trekking permit? +

Uganda gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and allocated per gorilla family per day (max 8 people). Afro-Views secures your permit as the first step in planning — this happens before lodges, routes or flights are confirmed. Permits should be booked at least 3–6 months ahead for peak season travel.

What is the best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking? +

Uganda can be visited year-round. The main dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer better trail conditions and are the most popular booking windows. The green season (March–May, October–November) has wetter trails but fewer crowds, better lodge pricing and lush forest atmosphere — the gorilla encounter itself is equally remarkable.

How difficult is gorilla trekking? +

Treks range from 45 minutes to 6+ hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved. Bwindi trails are steep, through dense forest. Reasonable fitness is needed — most guests in moderate health complete treks comfortably. We recommend the right sector based on your fitness level. Porters are available and recommended.

Can I combine Uganda with Tanzania or Kenya? +

Yes — Uganda gorilla trekking pairs naturally with a Tanzania northern circuit or Kenya safari. We design the full multi-country itinerary including permits, internal and international flights, and routing logic so everything connects cleanly as one trip.

How much does an Uganda safari cost? +

A Uganda-only gorilla trekking and safari circuit typically starts from USD $3,500–$5,000 per person for 7–10 days, excluding international flights, depending on lodge level and included parks. The gorilla permit (USD $700) is included. We provide a detailed cost breakdown in every proposal.

Is Uganda safe for travellers? +

Uganda's main national parks and tourist circuits are well-established and safe for international travel. Kidepo Valley (northern Uganda) involves a more remote experience — we provide current travel advice and always monitor regional conditions. Afro-Views provides 24/7 in-country support throughout your trip.
